What is hemp flower?

Both hemp and marijuana contain cannabinoids such as THC, CBD, and CBT, within their leaves and stocks, but the concentrations are very minute. What makes these plants special is that the females grow flowering buds ripe with much higher concentrations of those same cannabinoids. These dense, cannabinoid-laden buds are iconic to the cannabis plant, of which both marijuana and hemp are subspecies. 

Marijuana vs. hemp

Although the two are of the same genus, the differences between hemp and marijuana are stark. But these differences do not lie in physical appearance. In fact, at a glance, the two are nearly indistinguishable. These differences lie within the concentrations of cannabinoids that each possess, most notably those of Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The THC content in hemp ranges from less than 0.1%-0.5%. On the other hand, marijuana THC content can be anywhere from 5% all the way up to 30%. Some extremely potent strains can be even higher than that. 

Δ9-THC is the most significant cannabinoid because it is the most powerful psychoactive ingredient in the plant. It is for this reason cannabis was made illegal in the early 1900s. The psychoactive properties of this compound were so potent that the government could not overlook them. Yet while marijuana has up to 30% of this psychoactive compound, hemp has less than 1%. The difference in this regard is immense. 

Is hemp flower legal?

Despite the differences between the two, for most of human history, people simply considered marijuana and hemp to be the same thing. It is for this reason that hemp has faced such harsh legal constraints over the past decade. When marijuana was initially made illegal in 1937, hemp was made illegal as well. It was only just recently that people became conscious of the differences between the two plants. 

Because hemp has less than 0.3% delta 9 THC, it's not held to the same legal constraints as marijuana. This has opened the door for the production and sale of hemp flower. Hemp flower is sold as is, or it can be infused with other cannabinoids such as CBD or delta 8.

One key thing to remember is that hemp flower in its natural state has very low amounts of delta 8 THC—less than a fraction of a percent. In order to get the beneficial effects of delta 8, it must be added to the hemp flower. There are a few different methods for doing this, but the most essential component is distillate. 

Distillate is made by taking extracted delta 8 and further refining it until it is close to 100% purity. This distillate is then evenly applied to hemp buds, most often through the process of spraying or tumbling. Once the bud has had sufficient time to dry, it is ready to be smoked.
