Three Kinds of Mushroom Product, Regularly Confused

Amanita muscaria is a separate genus containing muscimol and ibotenic acid. Neither compound is scheduled federally. This is what most products in this collection are built around.
The confusion is not accidental. Brand naming in this category leans heavily on “magic mushroom,” and several products here carry that phrase while containing no psilocybin at all. Read the compound named on the label, not the name on the front of the pack.
What This Collection Actually Contains
Fifty-five products across five formats. Gummies and candies make up the largest share, followed by tablets and capsules, then chocolate bars, then drinks and shots, with a small number of vapes and other formats.
The active compound in most of these is muscimol, derived from Amanita muscaria. A number of products pair it with a functional blend, and the Polka Dot bar is a useful illustration of how that works in practice: 0.5 mg of muscimol isolate per piece alongside a 500 mg proprietary blend of Lion’s Mane, Reishi, Turkey Tail and Cordyceps. The Amanita component is the active. The functional component is supporting. That distinction determines how the product is regulated, so it is the one to read for.
Choosing a Format
Each format has a real trade-off and none of it is about effect.
Gummies are the most common and the easiest to buy, but they have a sugar base, they soften in heat, and splitting one gives you an approximation rather than a measured portion.
Tablets give the most granular unit. No sugar base, they do not melt, and a scored tablet divides more accurately than anything else here. Their weakness is moisture: a compressed tablet absorbs it and loses integrity.
Chocolate bars divide across scored pieces and cocoa masks the bitterness of the extract well. They are the most vulnerable format to heat, and a melted bar loses its per-square consistency.
Drinks and shots come pre-portioned in a single container, which removes the division problem entirely, at a higher cost per unit.
Muscimol, Ibotenic Acid and How These Products Are Made
Amanita muscaria contains two compounds that matter. Ibotenic acid is the precursor and is the one associated with nausea. Muscimol is what manufacturers formulate around, and published pharmacology describes it as a GABA-A receptor agonist that crosses the blood-brain barrier readily.
Processing converts a portion of the ibotenic acid into muscimol through decarboxylation, a reaction driven by heat and time. Tsunoda and colleagues documented the effect in 1993, finding that drying raised muscimol content while depleting ibotenic acid, with the shift more pronounced under acidic conditions. Conversion is partial rather than complete, so no honest manufacturer claims to have removed ibotenic acid entirely.
One persistent myth is worth correcting. Muscarine is present in this mushroom at roughly 0.0003 percent of its weight according to published reviews, a level described as insufficient to produce toxic effects. It is not the active compound and it is not the risk it is often assumed to be.
Federal and State Position
Three distinct facts, and collapsing them into “legal” is the error running through most of this category’s content.
Not scheduled. Amanita muscaria, muscimol and ibotenic acid appear on no schedule of the federal Controlled Substances Act.
Not an approved food ingredient. On December 18, 2024, the FDA issued a Letter to Industry stating that Amanita muscaria, its extracts and its constituents are not authorized for use in conventional food, do not meet the Generally Recognized As Safe standard, and that food containing them is adulterated under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The agency advised consumers to avoid such foods, and in September 2025 issued a warning letter covering Amanita capsules, tincture and chocolate. Not scheduled and not approved as food are separate things and both are true simultaneously.
Prohibited in Louisiana. La. R.S. 40:989.1, enacted by Acts 2005 No. 159, lists Amanita muscaria among prohibited hallucinogenic plants and is keyed to material intended for human consumption. Note that the statute names the plant rather than the isolated compound; several widely copied sources describe it as a muscimol ban, which is not what the text says. Testing Standards Across the Range
The case for reading a certificate of analysis in this category is stronger than in any other we sell, and it rests on published evidence rather than on marketing. In 2024 the CDC reported that four of six Amanita and nootropic gummy packages tested across five brands contained unlabeled controlled substances, including psilocybin and psilocin.
So a useful COA does four things. It matches the batch number on your packaging. It reports muscimol as a measured figure rather than implying it from a blend total. It reports ibotenic acid separately so the ratio is visible. And it screens for undeclared actives alongside heavy metals, pesticides and microbials. A report showing the absence of psilocybin and psilocin is the most meaningful trust signal available in this category.
